The Basque Country has reached or is on track to reach the target for 57.7% of the reported indicators of the 2030 Agenda

Eustat has launched a new platform for monitoring the indicators of the 2030 Agenda in the Basque Country

Eustat remains committed to continuously expanding and disaggregating the set of statistical indicators that enable the achievement of the 169 targets and 17 Sustainable Development Goals included in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Basque Country to be quantified.

This commitment has prompted the upgrade of the platform for the dissemination of indicators of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Basque Country, which includes a total of 258 indicators. 248 of these are among the indicators defined by the United Nations at a global level, 8 are exclusive to the European Union, and another 2 are specific to the Basque Government.

Following the United Nations recommendation to report on as many global indicators as possible, taking into account the specific characteristics of each geographical area of interest, Eustat uses a wide range of information sources to report on the status of each indicator in the Basque Country. Of the 258 indicators included on the platform, 10 are not applicable to the Basque Country, as they refer to developing countries or multilateral states or organisations. As for the rest, the platform currently provides data on the Basque Country for 163 indicators, while an appropriate data source is still being sought for the other 85 indicators. Therefore, current coverage stands at 65.7%.

The histogram shows the percentage of indicators for each of the Sustainable Development Goals for which data on the Basque Country is available on the platform (1). Increasing coverage of the less well-reported Sustainable Development Goals is a priority for Eustat, which continues to explore new sources of information for them.

The disaggregation of indicators helps achieve a more accurate and detailed analysis of the phenomena covered by each indicator, which is why a significant part of Eustat's efforts are focused on this aspect. At present, 47 indicators are disaggregated by gender, 80 by province, and 21 by municipality. In addition, certain indicators are disaggregated into more specific categories relevant to particular areas or sectors.

Furthermore, 63.2% of the indicators with data for the Basque Country have been defined following a methodology harmonised across the Autonomous Regions, thus ensuring their full and direct comparability. This harmonisation was made possible by the collaboration agreement signed by the central statistical bodies of all the Autonomous Regions.

The new platform allows us to monitor the Basque Country's progress with regard to each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals

One of the new features of the platform is that it includes a measurement of the Basque Country's progress with regard to each indicator and a monitoring report summarising that progress for each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This makes it easier to assess the extent to which the goals set by the United Nations have been achieved.

The graph shows the assessment of the progress made with regard to the indicators, grouped by each of the 17 Goals.

Of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, the Basque Country has made the most progress towards the following goals: 7 Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all (for 83.3% of indicators, the target has been reached or is on track to be reached), 13 Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts (62.5%) and 11 Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable (60%).

On the other hand, the goals that the Basque Country needs to make more progress towards are: 9 Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation (30.8% of indicators are stagnating or regressing), 2 End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture (23.5%), 10 Reduce inequality within and among countries (21.4%) and 5 Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls (21.4%).

The following graph provides an overview of the Basque Country's progress across all the 2030 Agenda indicators for which information is currently available.

If we only consider the indicators for which information is available for the Basque Country (i.e. without taking into account those that are not applicable and those for which no data is currently available), for 57.7% of indicators, the target has been reached or is on track to be reached before 2030; for 16%, reasonable progress is being made, but needs to be accelerated in order to reach the target; and in 17.2% of cases, the Basque Country is stagnating or regressing. For 9.2% of indicators, progress cannot currently be assessed due to a lack of sufficient data or contextual information.

In addition to the data for each of the indicators and the assessment of their progress, the new dissemination platform includes other useful information for monitoring the 2030 Agenda indicators, such as comparisons with international data, links to platforms for the dissemination of Sustainable Development indicators in other countries and Autonomous Regions, and publications on the 2030 Agenda and its implementation in the Basque Country.
